SMALL UPDATE Apr 2021: Updated links. Removed some products no longer available. Moved Halo Sensitive Stomach Formula to top choice group.

The cat food world changes A LOT. When I have time, this list is updated. Meanwhile, you can help others by sharing info in the Comments.

Scratching your head in the cat food aisle? I’ve been there.

In fact, I’ve become a bit obsessive about how to choose the best cat food. I hope the hours of research and time I put into it will help you–and your cat. If you’re curious, I explain how I selected these cat foods here and answer FAQ’s about it here.

My main concern with cat food is how it affects:

To me, these issues are even more important than the quality and source of the micro-ingredients in a food and who manufactures the food. Of course, I would never use a cat food created in China, but high quality pet food canning plants are few and far between even in the US. Now, there are some small ingredients I’ve taken a great interest in – such as carrageenan and BPA. This is because there may be life-threatening problems associated with these substances if they are consumed regularly over time. On the other hand, people ask about a lot of ingredients, like guar gum, that are not – to my knowledge thus far – known to be a big risk.

I think it’s easy, out of concern for your cat, to lose sight of the forest for the trees. So for me it’s about minimizing risk while keeping the higher priorities (above) in perspective and making sure we have enough good options to choose from.

Today’s best cat foods

If your cat has special health issues, please be sure to consult with a good vet about their food. If your cat has an illness with weakened immunity, some vets recommend avoiding raw meat as a precaution against bacteria.

While all of these cat food choices are unbiased and based solely on what I would buy, I have started to allow some links on this page to be affiliate links in order to keep this blog funded.

Most cats resist unfamiliar food at first! Buy and try SMALL at first AND use these smart tips to help your cat accept new foods:

If your cat has IBS symptoms or digestive issues

See How treatment-resistant feline IBS symptoms healed in one month and What to feed cats with feline IBS, diarrhea, or frequent hairballs.

If your cat’s favorite natural cat food didn’t make the list…

Many cat foods almost made this list. There were so many foods, I had to be brutal in selecting.

See These natural cat foods didn’t make the “best” list: here’s why (includes the Runner Ups!).

Maybe I missed a food. Let me know if you have questions–I won’t always be able to answer every question personally, but I will add foods you ask about to my “To Be Researched” list.

I also started a list best dry cat foods here–with some health caveats.

Resources

Where to find these foods

  • Only Natural Pet Store (carries most of these foods – affiliate store chosen for their reasonable prices)
  • Amazon.com and Petfooddirect.com carry many of these foods.
  • Many brands are available online directly from the company that makes them
  • Your local pet food store (especially if holistic) may have some brands
  • Whole Foods carries Primal cat food

Resources for making cat food

Making your own raw cat food can cost even less than the packaged raw cat foods, and is one the healthiest things you can do for most cats. However, it is absolutely essential that you do it right, and add proper nutrients—serious health problems could result if you don’t add the right nutrients. Here’s the scoop!

Your experience? Let’s talk!

None of these foods are perfect, but they met my “best of” criteria. However, every cat has different needs, just like you and I do.

I welcome your experiences, opinions, and contributions in the comments below.

  1. Thank you for your research and sharing of that knowledge. It has helped immensely to gain a better understanding in selecting cat food! I cross reference it with a pdf of Data compiled by Lisa A. Pierson, DVM that I found on this website, https://catinfo.org/
    https://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf

Although the pdf has not been revised recently it still helps me to create a shopping list that is not entirely dependant on one brand, recipe, or company if it should become out of stock or discontinued. I am grateful for the standard you set with this list and I always start here. My daughter fostered seven homeless kittens through Forgottencats.org and adopted one of them after the others were adopted. They were fed well as a result of your research and we refer to this list often now.

  2. Companies that list “grain free” often add potatoes and green peas. Both are not good foods for cats. Wellness adds carrots. Cats lack the enzymes to make use of the vitamin C in carrots. They make vitamin C in their livers. I am so sick of the lies these food companies tell so they can make a profit. Cats are obligate carnivores and they need a diet of meat, not carbohydrates!

    1. I am not a fan of dry food, but I have to feed whatever one of kittys will eat. She seems to be allergic to fish and peas? Dr Elsey’s makes a dry food that has no peas. She loves it. She has chronic upper respiratory and herpes, also a gag reflex from eating and running as a feral. This food has made a huge change in her coat and no throwing up. I have also been boiling BONELESS chicken thighs for her to drink the juice and ea the meat. She has never looked better. Seriously, its worth a shot. havent tried the wet food. Looks a bit pricey but maybe I will. Dr. ELsey’s DRY FOOD IS AMAZING!!

    2. Finally, somebody said it! They claim these “fruits” and “veggies” are excellent source of vitamins and minerals required by AAFCO, but fail to mention that animals’ digestive system works differently than humans. People are raised with belief that veggies are good for you, so “naturally” must be good for our pets. Not to mention, that cooked vegetables lose nutrients. These companies spend thousands of $ on marketing to make us belief anything they sell! I mean, Nature’s Variety Instinct managed to persuade customers that Montmorillonite Clay they use as a “natural” anti-caking agent, has great detoxifying and health benefits. Have you really examined their food though? It’s rocks. Not even powder. Literally tiny pebbles. And we’re feeding it to our pets. I fail to see how rocks could benefit an organism. At best, they pass through the system and not cause a blockage somewhere. And the way they twisted FDA findings (their brand included in report) on food related to DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs, it’s really unbelievable. The audacity of these companies, I can’t.
None of the available commercial foods are safe. Yet again we come back to conclusion that the best and safest way is to prepare your own pet food, either raw or cooked, with added necessary supplements. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford (financially or time-wise) to do that.

  3. I was looking at primal raw but didn’t see it on their website. Curious how their current line of nuggets holds up.

    1. I recently stopped buying Primal, as all four of my cats would no longer eat it. I then read, I believe, that they’ve changed their formula, as did Stella & Chewy’s. I’m sorry, but I can’t remember specifically what I read or where I read it, so you’ll have to dig into Google, but that’s my experience.

      1. Also watch out for guar gum. Its in everthing. Cata arent suppose to eat fish either. The trouble with most freeze dried raw is clay. What the heck is clay doing in the food? Right now l feed some dry (fussie cat fuinea fowl and duck ia fish free and made in USA.- yes its dry and thats terrible but times are tight and its only 50p) , I get some beef sirloin and kidney from the grocery. I’ll be back to ordering from Hare Today soon. I highly recommend them even though its foos raised for pet food (which is sad but who can say its worse than what Purina does….phenobarbitol and that monkey business with water)

        1. Nikki, interested to know where you read about guar gum and clay. Keeping up with cat food companies is exhausting. I, too, want to buy from HT, but I need to buy a freezer first. Right now, my dishwasher is broken, and my furnace is acting up. Sigh. Always something.

  4. Due to the recent pet food shortage, some of my cat’s usual Wellness wet food flavors from Petco were out of stock, so I discovered a new-to-me grain-free brand called Catit (a Canadian company) at my local pet store, Pet Supplies Plus. I bought a few of their Chicken Dinner with Liver and Sweet Potato pots. There weren’t any obviously suspicious ingredients on the list, but what do you think? They also have some air-dried foods from New Zealand called Gold Fern.

  5. My chicken-obsessed cat might have IBD and so I’m to try to eliminate chicken from her diet. She also hates pate. She likes birds and fish, but I think she’s also sensitive to fish. She does not the larger animals like beef or venison. Rabbit she kindof likes, but I think it upset her stomach. So, non-pate turkey without too many fillers. Not an easy task.

I finally landed on Lotus Just Juicy Turkey. It has potato starch (why?) and salmon oil (for omega 3,6?), but I don’t see any other fish in it, as described in the reasoning for it being in the 2nd best category.

Might this be ok for a Limited Ingredient Diet?

Here is the ingredient list from their website:
Turkey, Turkey Broth, Carrots, Potato Starch, Calcium Carbonate, Monosodium Phosphate, Salt, Olive Oil, Salmon Oil, Agar-Agar, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Zinc Proteinate, Iron Proteinate, Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Manganese Proteinate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Copper Proteinate, Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin, Vitamin A Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Biotin, Potassium Iodide, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Sodium Selenite

Thank you so very much for this website and keeping this going!

    Be Well,
    Janice

    1. My 11 yr old male cat has pancreatitis! Spent another $1,500 at the vet so he could be hooked up to IV FLUIDS etc!! New veterinarian put him on hills science diet prescription I/D canned chicken and vegetable stew! I also give him Phytomaxx CBD oil everyday as well as Uromaxx for his urinary & bladder issues! 6. Hi!
I bought some Ziwi Peak cat food after reading your article and so far so good. However, I just realized that they have chickpea in the ingredients and online research has shown it is a big NO for cats to eat chickpea. I am interested in your opinion on that. For that reason, I will no longer continue to purchase Ziwi Peak although it does seem quality products.

  7. My cat drinks the gravy but doesn’t eat much of the food even though it’s tiny pieces. He used to love pate but stopped eating it. I am using fancy feast nature’s chicken in gravy. What can u recommend? And can it be purchased at Chewy.com. He is normal weight with no problems except he has almost no teeth. Thanks!

    1. How would you rate Dave’s Naturally Healthy wet food, turkey and chicken? The other flavors have carrageenan or guar gum.

  8. Hello Im trying to change my kitty diet, I chose a brand called Canagan, have you heard about this? brand do you think the ingredients are good? I did bit of research and it looks like it’s very good but I would like to find out what are your thoughts are about this food.
Thank you for such a amazing blog I can learn a lot about cats. Thank you once again 🙂

  9. Stellas Freeze Dried RAW Dinner Morsels now contains ground bones. I was going to feed it to my senior cat but now I can’t.

    1. Kara, Probably bc of kidney disease? I tried to do a little research, but Google research is such BS these days, it’s hard to find anything but bogus copy/paste websites and ads. In the past, I had several seniors, some with kidney disease, and, at the time, researched what was best for them, but the info is ever-changing, as I’m sure you know. A lot of articles out there still say to limit protein, but that’s been discounted, so I wonder about the bones issue as well. Many of my favorite cat sites have relevant articles but they are older. It would, of course, have to do with the amount of bone in the food; and there may be other ingredients that even counter the effects of bone. If I were in your situation, I would email S&C and ask them about it. Usually, I don’t ever advocate taking a seller’s word for it about their own product, but I’d just see what they say; and get it in writing. What I found at the time I was dealing with the senior cat food issue, and still believe to be true now, is that the most important thing you can do is feed the healthiest food possible and provide lots of water. You do add water to the food, right? Interestingly, I discovered recently that adding bottled water instead of tap water to my cats’ food makes a huge difference in their acceptance of it. Altho our city’s tap water is supposed to be fine, I find it has a slight bleachy taste/smell, so I drink bottled (2 gal size cont’rs). Seems it was off-putting to the cats as well. If you do write to S&C, please post their response here. I’d be interested to know what they say.

  10. I SO appreciate a list that doesn’t just pull results from Amazon’s best sellers but actually RESEARCHES! This said, I don’t understand your concern about BPA (ALL plastics are toxic, leach, and disrupt hormones) – and there are very few commercial foods (for any species) not packaged in plastic or canned. Cans present different toxins. As you said, it’s all about weighing the risks — unless you can afford to feed your animals organic, grass-fed, free range meats. Even then, the bones are contaminated with lead, at best.

    1. Their website is still up and says nothing. They might be experiencing slowdowns due to COVID 19.

      1. It seems they’re discontinuing 😕
I just read this in their website:

        1. My vet STRONGLY recommends Hills Science Diet Feline, Purina Pro Plan Feline, and
Royal Canine Feline. But I’ve been reading that those major brands are not good. Any thoughts?

          1. Your vet is a paid sponsor of those foods and was probably taught in his corporate-backed vet training that those crap foods should be recommended and sold to the public. 1. After your comment I read the ingredients of one the recommended prescription cat foods my vet gave me (my aby who had to be treated for a urinary problem last week ~ Hill’s Prescription Diet c/d Multicare Urinary Care with chicken) The first three ingredients were Pork by Products, Water, & Pork Liver! Oh my gosh! I took the case back to Petsmart to exchange for his old food~ Instinct Limited Ingredient Diet canned cat food. And then ordered a stainless steel water fountain from Amazon.

              1. Good work! You sound like a very caring cat mama. Most commercial cat foods are terrible. I’ve found a few that are acceptable and seem pretty good, so those are the ones I feed- IF my cats will accept them, of course. I always look for all/mostly meat, grain-free, and low carb. I try to avoid foods with potatoes, peas, and soy which are used as fillers. I feed mainly canned and freeze-dried raw. It’s an uphill battle! Good luck. >^..^<
